Puerto Ricans may agree that the fried, filled turnover is delicious; agreeing on whether it is an empanadilla or a pastelillo is another matter entirely. The preferred name varies by region and personal allegiance, and the argument is part culinary vocabulary, part identity test.

The point is not to translate either word into a generic “turnover.” The controversy lives in which Puerto Rican name a speaker considers correct.
